High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Lincoln wins 12th straight match in tennis08:18 AM EDT on Friday, May 9, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Lincoln avenged its only loss of the season, a 5-2 defeat to Cumberland on April 2, and in the process the Lions stretched their winning streak to 12 by beating the previously undefeated Clippers, 4-3, in Division II boys tennis. Lincoln trailed, 3-0, after Cumberland swept all of the doubles matches. Lincoln won all four singles matches, including three in three sets. Tom Mackenty won, 7-5, 2-6, 6-0, at second, Imran Puthawala won, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3, at third and Eric Tirrell earned a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory at fourth. Lincoln is 12-1 while Cumberland fell to 13-1. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Chariho scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull off a dramatic upset of Division I-South baseball leader South Kingstown, 2-1. After eight scoreless innings, South Kingstown (13-3) manufactured a run in the top of the ninth. Kevin Carey singled, took third on a Ryan Stone double and later scored when Sean O’Neil was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Chariho (7-8) escaped further damage when reliever Colin DeWald entered the game with one out and the bases loaded and pitched out of the jam. Zach Woods led off the Chariho ninth with a single, stole second and scored on Jake Blanding’s double to right center to tie it at 1-1. Blanding scored the winning run on Andy Devereaux’ single to right. •Jill Pedro scored her third goal of the game with 56 seconds to play in regulation and Ani Arzoomanian had her only goal with 58 seconds left in the second overtime as unbeaten Scituate (10-0) rallied for a 9-8 victory over Warwick in Division II girls lacrosse. Scituate, which trailed 5-3 at halftime, got the tying goal from Pedro, then had to overcome an 8-7 deficit after the first three-minute overtime. Scituate tied it at 8-8 on Katie Birrell’s goal 1:58 into the second overtime, then won it on Arzoomanian’s goal. •The top of the Division I softball standings got a little tighter yesterday when La Salle (8-2) beat first-place Bay View (10-2), 2-0. Three teams (Bay View, La Salle and Westerly) currently sit atop the standings with two losses apiece. Jordan Tingley pitched a two-hitter for La Salle, striking out five. La Salle got both of its runs in the sixth when Mary Holt scored on an error and pinch-runner Kelly Allin scored on Lauren Lenoi’s sacrifice fly. SPOTLIGHT •The St. Raphael baseball team worked its way back to .500 yesterday (8-8), led by Nick Gaj, who went 3-for 4 with three RBI, and Doug Hopper, who had two hits and two RBI in a 7-2 win over La Salle. •With bases loaded and one out and the score tied in the seventh inning, Cranston East’s Joe Enright singled in Chris Valerio for the 3-2 walk-off win in a Division I-West baseball game. Pat Lavey went the distance for the Thunderbolts, scattering five hits and striking out four. •Evan Marzilli led off the game with a homer and finished with three hits and three RBI as Hendricken shut out Coventry, 10-0, in Division I baseball. Milan Adams added a three-run homer to back an outstanding performance by Josh Lynch, who pitched six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out five. •John Tangherini went 2-for-4, including a towering two-run homer that made it 4-0 in a five-run fifth inning, and the Lincoln baseball team posted an 11-3 win over Smithfield. •Steve Crawford hit a bases-clearing triple in the top of the seventh inning — after Moses Brown had scored three runs in the previous inning to close to two runs — as Barrington’s baseball team posted an 8-4 win over the Quakers. •Chris Almonte hit a two-run homer and Johan Medrano and Waldo Sime each had an RBI single, leading Juanita Sanchez to a 4-3 victory over Exeter/West Greenwich in Division II baseball. •Nate Lindsley went 3-for-3, including a two-run double in the first inning, and pitcher Jay Jeannotte scattered four hits over seven innings and struck out five as the Narragansett baseball team defeated West Warwick, 4-1. •With the match tied, 3-3, the first doubles team of Nick DelGreco and Andy Chatam came through with a 6-4, 6-3 win to give the North Kingstown tennis team a 4-3 team win over Mount St. Charles. •St. Raphael swept all three doubles matches, including the clincher from Tim Ferriera and Brian Gil at third doubles, as the Saints defeated Shea, 4-3, in Division III boys tennis. •Mary Grace Ilardi had two goals and three assists and Prout overcame a six-goal performance by Mt. Hope’s Kayla Whiting in the Crusaders’ 8-7 victory over the Huskies in Division II lacrosse. •Michelle Mowbray’s sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning drove in Cassidie Ern with the winning run as Chariho defeated Cumberland, 2-1, in Division I softball. •Katie Costa drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the sixth inning and Jessica Searles added a two-run double, lifting Cranston West to a 4-2 win over Pilgrim in Division I softball. •Ryan Innarelli hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning as Cumberland beat Woonsocket, 8-6, in Division I baseball. |
