High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Classical's Flowers sets a new standard for hammer toss01:35 PM EDT on Monday, May 12, 2008EVENT OF THE DAY Classical track star Victoria Flowers set a meet record at the Hartford Invitational yesterday, throwing the hammer 179 feet, 10 inches. It was the best toss in the country this year and topped the former meet mark of 177-2, set by another Rhode Islander, Nicole Allen, of Warwick in 2001. Another Classical athlete, Mickie Jusme, established a Rhode Island record in the triple jump. Her leap of 37 feet, 11 inches was 11 inches better than the old mark. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •With two men away, the North Smithfield baseball team came from three runs down when Chris Nasuti got an RBI single and then stole second, and Ben Ethier drove in runners from second and third, giving the Northmen a 3-2 win over Burrillville. •Rob Maggiacomo had a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth to give the La Salle baseball team a 6-5 win over Smithfield. Brent Hopkins also had a home run, went 3-for-3, scored three runs and stole two bases for the Rams. SPOTLIGHT •La Salle’s Juliet Vongphoumy shot a 5-over par 78, and is tied for third place in the Medicus Preseason Junior at Rochester (N.Y.), conducted by the American Junior Golf Association. The 36-hole stroke play event consists of 84 boys and 16 girls, ages 12 to 18, from 17 states, Mexico and Canada. •Brian La Bianca hit two home runs, totaled six RBI and scored two runs and Dan Hopkins struck out six in six innings as the Cranston West baseball team defeated Pilgrim 13-0 in a Division I-West contest. •Dan Brookfield had a home run as part of a 3-for-4, three-RBI, two-run day and the Moses Brown baseball team improved to 11-5 with a 9-1 win over East Providence. Billy Cosmopulos pitched the complete game, with eight strikeouts, allowing only two hits and is now 6-0 in Division I competition. •Derek Nesbitt struck out nine and gave up no earned runs as the North Providence baseball team held off St. Raphael 6-3. Matt Nassi was 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and two RBI for the Cougars. •Jared Winston went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI and Jim Houk and Brian Shelburne both had two hits as the Portsmouth baseball team defeated Tiverton 7-4 in Division I-East. •Jenna Matisewski scored two goals and assisted on another and Brianna Bucci also scored twice, helping Cranston West post a 10-3 victory over Cranston East in the Cranston City Cup. |
