High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Saturday, April 1201:50 PM EDT on Sunday, April 13, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Some late inning fireworks, in the form of a three-run homer by Kevin Woodcock, coupled with less than perfect defensive play led to an 8-7 comeback win for the Coventry baseball team over Pilgrim. Down three runs in the bottom of the seventh, Joe Gardner singled and Steve Alben reached on an error before Woodcock came to the plate and tied it up with one swing. After a walk and another error, Nick Ziehl lined a shot to the wall, scoring Nate Shaw for the walk-off win. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Jeff Cantrell pitched 4 2/3 innings of no-hit ball and finished with a two-hit shutout as East Providence blanked Rogers, 6-0, in Division I baseball. Cantrell allowed a two-out single in the fifth and a hit in the seventh as the junior righty fanned five and walked just one. Michael Fisher provided the offense with a two-run homer in the fourth and Derrick MacLeod contributed two hits and two RBI. •Portsmouth improved to 5-0 heading into Monday’s showdown with two-time defending state champion Cranston West as the Patriots posted a 7-4 victory over Middletown in Division I baseball. Ben Grande led Portsmouth’s 10-hit attack, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Ryan Westmoreland added a single, double, two runs scored and a RBI. •North Kingstown’s Jamale Horn had a single and a home run for two RBI while pitcher Jay Ferri struck out eight in a complete-game performance as the Skippers defeated Narragansett, 4-1, in a Division I-South game. Jay Jeannotte struck out eight in six innings for the Mariners. SPOTLIGHT •Tyler Duffy and Tom Darnowski were a combined 4-for-8 with five RBI lifting La Salle to an 8-3 victory over Woonsocket in Division I baseball. Duffy had two hits and three RBI while Darnowski added two hits and two RBI. James Lawless pitched a four-hitter and finished with five strikeouts. •Alex Patch had a pair of goals and five assists, leading the Moses Brown boys lacrosse team to an 11-3 win over Wheeler in a nonleague contest. John Sweriduk had 20 saves for Wheeler. •Cassidie Ern pitched a complete game three-hitter with eight strikeouts and her batterymate Amanda Dolan belted a two-run homer as Chariho defeated West Warwick, 4-1, in softball. •The Portsmouth Abbey girls lacrosse team beat Winsor School, 21-14, in Boston on the eight-goal, two-assist performance of Ally Boglioli. Madison Nunes added three goals and two assists and Steph Perez had three goals and an assist while Ravens goalie Josie O’Reilly stopped 18 shots in the Eastern Independent League win. |
