High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Chariho senior no-hits West Warwick10:05 AM EDT on Tuesday, May 13, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Mike DeWald needed just one run in the first inning as the senior righty tossed a no-hitter, stretching Chariho’s winning streak to five and moving the Chargers one game over .500 in Division I baseball with a 1-0 victory over West Warwick. DeWald threw 67 of his 99 pitches for strikes, struck out seven and walked two. Chariho (9-8) got the game’s only run in the bottom of the first when Sean Banker walked, stole second, moved to third on Zach Woods’ groundout and scored on Jake Blanding’s groundout. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Lincoln’s Paul Tangherlini won his fifth straight decision as the senior outdueled Cumberland’s Mark Nunes in the Lions’ 3-2 Division I baseball win. Tangherlini went the distance, allowing four hits, two runs (one earned) and striking out 13. •Middletown made Portsmouth work for its Division I -leading 16th baseball victory as the Patriots outlasted the Islanders, 4-3, in nine innings. Portsmouth snapped a 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth on a Brian Shelburne RBI groundout but Middletown answered in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Zach Yates. Portsmouth scored the game-winner in the top of the ninth when Dan Dugan walked with the bases loaded to score Adam Reece. •Coventry got all of its runs in the fourth inning on three Westerly errors and the Oakers held on in the final inning for a 3-2 win over the Bulldogs in Division I softball. Lynn Pesola, Hannah Cole and Halee McHale scored for Coventry. SPOTLIGHT •Joe Ferle hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth and Gibson Fines went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double in Exeter/West Greenwich’s 8-5 baseball victory over Prout. •Sarah Beron set a career-high for goals in a season as she netted five last night, giving her 44 for the year, in North Providence’s 9-6 victory over Tiverton in girls lacrosse. Beron broke her previous high of 40, which she set last year. •Jamie Hallam pitched her first no-hitter of the season and helped her own cause with a triple, three-run homer and two runs scored as Barrington (12-1) beat Narragansett in Division II softball, 6-0. •Emily Tessier and Brittany Lewis combined to throw a no-hitter while Alex Butler was 4-for-4 with a triple, two-run homer, three runs scored and three RBI in Middletown’s 6-0 Division II softball win over East Greenwich. •Maddie Brown led Bay View with 12 goals in an 18-11 girls lacrosse win over South Kingstown. |
