High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Barrington girls come back for lacrosse win over Portsmouth04:06 PM EDT on Wednesday, May 14, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Down 7-5 at halftime, the defending state champion Barrington girls lacrosse team scored six goals in the first five minutes of the second half to take the lead for an eventual 19-9 win over Portsmouth. Becky Bracken (5 goals, assist) and Lauren Bayuk (5 goals) led the way for the Eagles and goalie Avery Griffith stopped 12 shots. Olivia Ougheltree had three goals and two assists for Portsmouth. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •La Salle’s Jordan Tingley struck out six, scattering four hits over seven innings and notched her sixth shutout this season with a 2-0 win over Mount St. Charles. Zeena Barbarita was 2-for-3 and scored both runs for the Rams and Jillian Carderelli had an RBI single in the sixth inning. •East Providence pitcher Kelley Clancy recorded a shutout and struck out nine to lead the Townies to a 2-0 win over North Kingstown in Division I softball. Zach Trenteseaux had a double and an RBI and freshman Ryan O’Dell was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Lions. SPOTLIGHT •Zack Guillette knocked in two runs in the 14th inning of Tiverton’s 4-1 victory over Barrington in a two-day baseball game. The first 13 innings were played Monday before the game was halted by darkness. Ian Destremps knocked in the last run for the Tigers. •Rico DellaPorta pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout and struck out six to lead the Johnston baseball team to a 6-0 victory over Ponaganset. Nick Pistachio got the Panthers rolling in the first inning with a two-run triple. •Rocco Santopaetro pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and gave up six hits for Classical in a 5-3 baseball victory over Mount Pleasant. •Chris Ford went 2-for-2 with two RBI and Josh Lancellotti was 2-for-3 with an RBI in a 6-2 Mount St. Charles win over Burrillville in Division II baseball. •Nick Winchell had two doubles, scored three runs and had five RBI and Tom Bush went 3-for-3 with four runs and a pair of RBI for Scituate as it beat Davies, 22-18, in baseball. •Mike Young scored five goals and had an assist in leading the Prout boys lacrosse team to a 9-2 win over Wheeler. •Chad Jackvony scored three and assisted on two goals and Kyle Reetz had a pair of goals and assists as the Lincoln boys lacrosse team pulled away from a 3-3 second-half tie to win 7-3 over Mt. Hope in a Division I-A contest. •The Tolman boys tennis team clinched the Division III-North title with a 5-2 victory over East Providence. The Tigers improved to 12-1 while the Townies fell to 8-5. •Pilgrim improved to 8-4 by beating Chariho, 6-1, in a Division III-South boys tennis match. The Patriots are in second place, behind Portsmouth. •Anna Carr scored five goals and Celia Corrente added four to lead the East Greenwich girls lacrosse team to a 13-10 win over North Kingstown. •Marissa Castelli scored the hat trick and Jenna Matisewski scored twice and had three assists as the Cranston West girls lacrosse team defeated Prout 9-5. •The Moses Brown girls lacrosse team improved to 10-1 in Division I with a 13-7 victory over La Salle as senior Chloe Schmitz recorded her 200th career point with a goal. Teammate Leah Saris led the Quakers with five goals. •The Barrington baseball team scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a two-run lead and held on for a 5-4 win over Narragansett in Division II-South. The Eagles scored their runs on an error and a two-out RBI single by Sarah Whitten. •Kylllie Magill had a double with one run scored, Jenn Tartaglia hit a triple and scored one run and Angela Palladino had a RBI and also scored one run for St. Raphael over Pilgrim, 4-0, in softball, improving the Saints to 5-7. •Jill George struck out 12 in a complete game and had a two-run double in the sixth inning to help her cause as the Cumberland softball team defeated Lincoln 6-1. •Kristen Mitchell knocked in Danielle Palms and Mitchell RBI singled in Danielle Palms in the fifth inning for Bay View over South Kingstown, 3-0, in baseball. Kady Poland, courtesy runner for Molly Thomsen, scored the third run for the Bengals on a RBI single from Marlene DiRaimo, improving Bay View to 11-2. •Macayla Kirylo pitched a no-hitter, striking out 13 in a complete-game 5-0 win over Scituate in a matchup of the top two teams in Division III softball. The win keeps the Tigers undefeated at 14-0 and drops the Spartans to 11-2. |
