Warwick’s only threat came in the third inning when Josh Cliff tried to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park homer but was thrown out at home by Melchiori. Pilgrim scored in the top of the seventh when Kevin Stenhouse singled, went to third on Mike Nadiger’s double and scored on Melchiori’s single. Furney scattered five hits and fanned five. Kevin Dale was the tough-luck loser, finishing with a complete-game, five-hitter with five strikeouts. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Nicole Ricci’s grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted the Ponaganset softball team to an 8-2 win over North Smithfield. Lea Lemoine started the Ponaganset rally with a one-out single. Stacey Barden reached on an error and pinch-hitter Amber Bigwood walked. Ricci, who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, then blasted a two-out grand slam over the right-field fence. Ponaganset starter Courtney Piccirillo tossed a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts. •After the East Providence baseball team went ahead in the top of the eighth inning on a John McLeod double, Tiverton came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame for the 6-5 extra-inning win. Leading off the bottom of the eighth, Mark Ventura singled and a two-base error put men on second and third. An intentional walk, followed by another walk, scored the tying run and Tyler Ferreira then singled for the walk-off win. •In the bottom of the 13th inning of a game delayed from April 7, John Guay doubled and Vaughn Hayward singled, giving Mount St. Charles a 6-5 win over Juanita Sanchez. It was the third time Hayward kept his team alive. A week ago in the seventh inning, his double tied the score, and in the 11th he tied the score again after Juanita Sanchez had taken a 4-3 lead. He ended the game with three hits and four RBI. Ryan Pangborn struck out the side at the top of the 13th for the Mounties. •Mike Connery pitched a complete-game six-hitter and Mason Martini’s sacrifice fly scored Jay Jeannotte in the second inning as the Mariners escaped trouble in five of the seven innings for a 1-0 victory over Chariho in Division I-South baseball. Connery, who whiffed six and walked three, left two runners stranded in the second, third and sixth innings. He also left a runner at third in the first inning and the tying run at second in the seventh. Chariho’s Sean Gilman finished with a seven-hitter, struck out five and didn’t issue a walk. •North Providence erased a 5-1 deficit with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Cougars defeated Woonsocket, 7-5, in Division I baseball. Jay Connors provided the heroics with the bat and on the mound. Connors delivered a one out, pinch-hit two-run double, then pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn his third save of the season. Matt Nassi provided a RBI single in the sixth. Melvin Torres and Justin Rainville each had three hits for the Novans. •Jesse Handler hit a two-run homer in the fifth that provided the tying and winning runs as Cranston East held on for a 4-3 win over Smithfield in Division II softball. SPOTLIGHT •Hendricken’s Andrew Ferreira threw a no-hitter, striking out 11 in a 7-0 Hawks victory over Toll Gate. Sophomore Tom Verdi went 3-for-3 from the plate, Danny Gamache’s double and triple led to two RBI, Chris Constantino added two hits and two RBI, and Tyler Brennan laced two doubles in the win. •Tyler Ponte hit a triple in the top of the 10th inning giving Middletown an 11-10 win over Barrington. •Chris Mann threw six shutout innings and Kyle Mann drove in the game-winning run as West Warwick blanked East Greenwich, 2-0, in Division I baseball. Chris Mann lost his no-hitter with two outs in the fifth. Kyle Mann had a RBI single in the first inning and West Warwick got its other run when Jeff Sampaio scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. •In a battle of 2-0 teams, the La Salle boys lacrosse team doubled up Hendricken, 10-5, to remain undefeated in the Division I standings. Brendan Rabideau scored three goals and assisted on three others to lead the Rams to victory. •Mike Young had six goals and Alex Beebe netted two and assisted on three others as the Prout boys lacrosse team defeated Mt. Hope, 9-3. •Steve Ricci had 30 assists, Max Henault added 20 and Mitchell Baldwin finished with 22 kills and 10 blocks as Lincoln defeated Shea, 3-1, in Division II-North boys volleyball. •Becky Norton’s two-out, two run single in the second inning proved to be the game-winner as the Johnston softball team defeated West Warwick, 2-1, in a Division II-North contest. Sherri Tallo struck out eight and walked only one in her complete-game win for the Panthers. •Hannah Cooney struck out 15 batters and lost her no-hit bid with one out in the seventh inning as Classical shut out North Providence, 6-0, in Division II softball. |
