High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: St. Andrew's wins SENE golf crown03:23 PM EDT on Thursday, May 15, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Andrew Fiorenzano of Wheeler High School fired an even-par 71 to win the individual title, but St. Andrew’s placed three players in the top 10 and captured the team competition in the SENE golf championships yesterday at the Norwich (Conn.) Country Club. The Saints finished with a 336 score, 18 strokes better than second-place Moses Brown. St. Andrew’s was paced by Zak Tramoni, who shot an 80 and finished second. Russell DeRener was fourth with an 83 and Dylan Edwards sixth with an 85. Marianapolis finished sixth with a 384 total. St. Andrew’s was second in the regular season with a 4-1 mark. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Bay View secured a playoff position in the golf semifinals, the first time an all-girls team has qualified for a playoff match. The Bengals finished with 199, Mt. Hope had 212 and Middletown 222 in an Eastern Division match at Swansea Country Club. •Ed Hjerp and Jared Adams shared medalist honors by shooting an even-par 36 at Montaup Country Club as Barrington (154) defeated Tiverton (173) and East Providence (178) in Eastern Division golf. The Eagles are 12-1 overall. •Wheeler’s Dave Vance had a pinch-hit two-run single in the sixth inning to cut the lead to one, but that was as close as the Warriors got. Providence Country Day’s Pat Rock got the final out of the sixth and shut them down in the seventh to hold on for a 6-5 Division II baseball win. •La Salle scored three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 11 and scored the winning run in the eighth for a 12-11 win over Cumberland in a Division I-North baseball game. Tom Darnowski had the winning hit in the eighth, a two-out RBI single. Matt Milano led La Salle with 4 hits, 4 RBI and 3 runs. SPOTLIGHT •Pedro Luna hit a homer in the bottom of the 10th as Central nipped Ponaganset, 7-6, in the completion of a Division II baseball game from April 2. Jon Vasquez hit a three-run homer that tied it in the seventh for the Knights before the game was suspended. •Aria Morris and Priscilla Tyler each scored 5 goals as Wheeler topped Lincoln School, 22-13, in girls lacrosse. •The Burrillville softball team rallied from a 6-4 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and defeated North Providence, 7-6, in a Division II-North contest. |
