The Knights got two first-half goals from Byron Garcia and two from Randall Kar in the second half to hand Shea its first Division II-North loss, 4-1. Central is now 6-6-1 while Shea falls to 10-1-3. Shea beat Central, 2-1, earlier this season. Garcia scored twice in the game’s first 10 minutes and Kar added goals in the 61st and 71st minutes. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •In a Division II-South boys soccer game, Cranston West (3-7-3) stunned first-place East Greenwich (9-1-3) when J.P. Petitpas scored with 4:30 remaining to give the Falcons a 2-2. East Greenwich overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit when Ben Berger scored on a penalty kick 11 minutes into the second half and Kyle Kelaghan knocked in a rebound in the 68th minute for a 2-1 lead. •Behind the offense of Katelyn Kerrigan and Anna Panyathong and the defense of goalie Jen Sito, Woonsocket qualified for the Division II field hockey playoffs for the first time in three years with a 2-0 win over Chariho. •Smithfield’s Erica Ricci scored with just less than one minute to play, helping Smithfield past Bay View, 2-1, in Division II girls soccer. Courtney Maguire had a goal and an assist for the Sentinels, who got 10 saves from goalie Jocelyn Grenier. Bay View, which suffered its second loss of the year (5-2-6), got its goal from Stacey Peloquin. •Alex Butler won, 6-2, 6-4, at fourth singles and Middletown swept the doubles matches as the Islanders defeated previously unbeaten PCD, 4-3, in Division IV-East girls tennis. The win moves Middletown into a first-place tie with PCD, which was one of only three unbeaten teams in the Rhode Island heading into yesterday’s play. Both teams are 14-1. . •The Cumberland girls tennis team clinched second place in Division II and a first-round bye in the playoffs with a 4-3 victory over Smithfield. The Clippers will be the second seed for the playoffs. Moses Brown earned the top seed. •Dylan Mello scored Portsmouth’s first goal, then assisted on Evan Carnevale’s second-half tally as the Patriots defeated Central Falls, 2-0, in a battle of first-place teams in Division I boys soccer. SPOTLIGHT •Krissy Gingell scored two goals just under three minutes apart in the first half then completed the hat trick by scoring with 2:35 to play as Burrillville blanked Rocky Hill, 3-0, in Division II field hockey. •Allison Harris scored two of her three goals in the final 10 minutes as the junior carried Pilgrim to a 3-3 tie with Westerly in Division II-South girls soccer. Westerly took a 3-1 lead after Brittany LeClair and Kiah Cabral scored two minutes apart midway through the second half. Harris made it 3-2 on her second goal with 10 minutes to play then tied with another goal three minutes later. •Tory Gomez recorded a hat trick, Mike Manfred scored twice and Evan Gaccione had a goal and three assists as Westerly rolled to a 6-1 win over Middletown in boys soccer. •April Daugerty scored three goals to lead the Lincoln field hockey team to a 4-2 win over Lincoln School. •Amanda Graham scored a goal in each half to give South Kingstown (10-1-1) a 2-1 victory over North Kingstown in Division I girls soccer. |
