High School Sports NewsHigh School Highlights, Thursday, April 1701:00 AM EDT on Friday, April 18, 2008![]() Sophomore Kameron Luther belted a pinch-hit grand slam in the top of the ninth to break a 9-9 tie and give the Mount St. Charles baseball team a 13-9 victory over Johnston in Division II-North. Mount, now 7-1, scored eight of its nine runs on home runs. Other homers for Mount came from Ryan Levesque (solo), Chris Ford (solo) and John Guay (two-run). WINNERS’ CIRCLE •After giving up a run in the top of the seventh that allowed Mount Pleasant to tie the score, Juanita Sanchez’s Josh Montanez singled to lead off the bottom of the inning, stole second and went to third on a fielder’s choice and scored the winning run on an Esmailin Sosa single for a 6-5 victory. Johan Rosario had a two-run homer for the Cavaliers in the fourth inning. Gerardo Valerio came in to relieve in the second inning after the Kilties took a three-run lead, struck out seven and allowed only two more runs in recording the win for Sanchez. •In less than a minute, St. Raphael turned a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 Division III boys tennis crossover victory as the Saints captured wins at second and third singles. Down 3-2, freshman Alex Bassett came back from a 5-2 deficit in the third set for a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory. Seconds later, Pat Gannon put the finishing touch on a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 victory at second singles to give the Saints the win in a matchup of second-place teams. •The Portsmouth boys tennis team improved to 4-0 in Division with a 6-1 victory over previously undefeated Tolman, which eliminated the Patriots from the playoffs last season in the semifinals. Freshman Nick Clark turned in a 6-2, 6-0 win at first singles to pace Portsmouth. The Tigers fell to 3-1. •Nissa Perez broke a 6-6 tie with a three-run homer in the sixth inning leading the Warwick softball team to a 10-8 victory over Lincoln. The Lions threatened in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded and two runs in but Warwick pitcher Casey Doyle got the final out on a pop up. Doyle finished with 10 strikeouts. •The Westerly softball team improved to 3-2 and handed Mount St. Charles its first loss of the season with a 4-3 victory in Division I. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the first inning aided by an RBI triple by catcher Hayleigh Meeker and teammate Heather Imperatore led off the seventh with a single and scored on a passed ball for the game-winning run. SPOTLIGHT •Jeff Salcedo was a combined 5-for-9 with six runs scored and eight RBI as unbeaten Central (7-0) swept Classical in a Division II baseball doubleheader. Central took the first game, 14-11, and the second, 13-3. In the first game, Salcedo was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Classical’s Justin Tabis had a two-run homer, a single, three runs and three RBI. Salcedo hit a three-run homer, drove in five and scored three runs in the second game. Tabis hit his second homer of the day, a two-run shot, and was 3-for-6 in the two games with five RBI. •Pinch-runner Coral Holly scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Chariho a 3-2 victory over Pilgrim in Division I softball. •Jason Romano hit a grand slam, Chris Cocci had a three-run homer, Andrew Conlin went 4-for-4 and three stolen bases and Jon Sartell went 3-for-3 as the Prout baseball team used a balanced attack to rout PCD, 14-2. •Trevor Horan and Joey Soares combined to pitch a no-hitter and Gil Whalen had three hits and three RBI as Wheeler blanked Fatima, 13-0, in Division II baseball. Horan struck out nine in five innings of work and Soares pitched a scoreless sixth inning. •Jeff Eaton and Chris Piquette defeated Dave Monson and Ben Bryant, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, for Cumberland to clinch a 4-3 tennis win over East Greenwich. •Hope Barone scored five goals and assisted on five others to lead Wheeler over Moses Brown, 17-7, in a nonleague girls lacrosse match. |
