High School Sports NewsHigh School Highlights, Friday, April 1807:24 AM EDT on Saturday, April 19, 2008Kristen Oh scored with 22 seconds remaining to give East Greenwich a 9-8 lead and goaltender Lauren Eckles saved a penalty shot with three seconds left to preserve the victory in a Division I girls lacrosse match. The Avengers led 8-4 with 18 minutes to play before the Patriots rallied to tie it, 8-8, on a goal by Amanda Smith with 46 seconds left. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Jay Ferri’s two-run double in the fifth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and gave North Kingstown a 5-4 victory over Pilgrim in a Division I baseball crossover. Dave D’Errico, who hit a solo homer, pitched six innings for the victory and Mark Medeiros pitched a scoreless seventh for his first save of the year. •Down 4-3 heading to its last at-bat, the Hendricken baseball team plated seven runs to defeat East Greenwich 10-4 in a Division I matchup. The Hawks’ Andrew Ferreira came on to pitch in the fifth inning and struck out seven while earning the win and Evan Marzilli was 2-for-4 with a home run, RBI and two runs scored. Chris Constantino had a double, triple and RBI for Hendricken. •Ben Carleson scored his second goal of the match two minutes into overtime to give the Barrington boys lacrosse team its first win of the season, 9-8, over PCD in Division I. Andrew Shea got the assist on the game-winner, feeding Carleson in front of the net from the right side. In regulation, the Eagles survived the last two minutes with a man down because of a penalty. •Brittany Lewis came back to pitch the seventh inning and recorded the final three outs after Prout had cut its deficit to one and Middletown held on for a 4-3 victory in Division II softball. Middletown led, 4-1, when Tayla Dorazio hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3. Lewis, who pitched the first six innings, came back in and got a strikeout and a double play to end the game. Chelsea Rodrigues had a two-run double for the Islanders. •After being frustrated for five innings by Warwick Vets pitcher, Michelle Sylvestre, the Bay View softball team exploded for four runs, all coming with two outs, in the bottom of the sixth and held on for a 4-2 nonleague win. Jazz Clarke and Kelsey Gammell both doubled and Kim Pelland singled in a run and Vanessa Poland singled in two more to make it a four-run inning for the Bengals. Molly Thomsen allowed two runners to reach base in the top of the seventh but struck out the potential game-winning run to seal the win for Bay View. SPOTLIGHT •Freshman Meredith O’Connell hit a two-run homer and Jamie Hallam improved to 5-1 with a two-hit shutout as Barrington blanked Mt. Hope, 3-0, in softball. Hallam struck out 14 and walked just one. •Miguel Castillo had three hits, including a two-run homer in the third inning, to lead the Hope baseball to a 6-3 victory over Central Falls in Division II baseball. •Lincoln’s David Hoey (five innings and five Ks) and David Ring (two innings) combined to throw a four-hitter while Matt Sorkin and Jeremy Rhault both had two hits and an RBI to lead the Lincoln baseball team to a 6-1 win over Tiverton. •Billy Cosmopulos threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and scattered three hits over seven innings as Moses Brown defeated North Providence, 5-0. in a Division I game. The Quakers’ Graham Tyler went 2-for-3 with a triple, double, an RBI and two runs scored. •Ryan Westmoreland was 3-for-5 with two triples, a double, three runs scored and five RBI in Portsmouth’s 13-2 win over Woonsocket in Division I baseball. John Pedrotty was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, a run scored and three RBI. •Eli Rodrigues scored four goals and Crosby Johnson and Marcel Brown had two apiece to lead the Wheeler boys lacrosse team to a 12-5 victory over Mt. Hope. •Alex Beebe scored four goals and assisted on three others and Mike Young had three goals and four assists as Prout beat Cumberland in boys lacrosse, 14-4. |
