High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Monday, April 2107:37 AM EDT on Tuesday, April 22, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Classical’s Josh Okolowitcz and Davies’ Dino Gomes were engaged in a pitchers’ duel, but Okolowitz helped his own cause with a double in the bottom of the third and scored the winning run on a two-out double by Justin Tabis as the Purple edged the Patriots, 1-0, in a Division II-South baseball game. Both pitchers went the distance. Okolowitcz finished with five strikeouts and Gomes had six. WINNER'S CIRCLE •Pat Mock’s single knocked in the winning run after Wheeler had tied the score against PCD in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving the Warriors an 8-7 win in Division II-East baseball. •With a two-run double in the four-run sixth inning Kyle Van Rossum (three hits, two RBI) helped lead the Burrillville baseball team to a 6-3 win over Central, handing the Knights their first loss. •Connor O’Donnell scored with just over a minute left in overtime to lead the La Salle boys lacrosse team to a 7-6 win over North Kingstown. •The Cumberland boys tennis team improved to 7-0 with a 6-1 win over Westerly. The Clippers’ Alex Werchadlo clinched the victory with a 6-3, 7-5 win at first singles. •Ponaganset’s Jim Brand and Greg Wachtel came from behind in the tiebreaker of their first set at second doubles, scoring six straight points to take the set, 7-6 (8-6), and seal the 4-3 team win over North Smithfield. •Smithfield pitcher Cassie Acciaoli doubled to lead off the sixth inning and scored on an error for the winning run as the Sentinels defeated Classical, 2-1, in a Division II softball game. Smithfield tied it, 1-1, in the fifth on Reanna Votta’s leadoff triple. SPOTLIGHT •Jacob Alanzo tossed a one-hitter and Yuefri Hiraldo and Kevin Paddock each hit three-run homers to lead the Mount Pleasant baseball team to a 12-0 victory over Fatima. •Vaughn Hayward pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts through six innings and his brother Garrett came on in the seventh to close it out as the Mount St. Charles baseball team shut out Hope, 10-0, in Division II. •The bats of Derek Ethier and Kyle Dumont led the Tolman baseball team to a 14-4 victory over Central Falls in Division II-East. Ethier had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, 4 RBI and scored 2 runs while Dumont had 4 hits, including a double and 3-run homer, 4 RBI and scored 2 runs. •Brian Van Pelt went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer to lead the North Smithfield baseball team to a 14-5 victory over Juanita Sanchez. •The North Providence softball team got home runs from Stephanie Coro and Megan Joly as the Cougars defeated Cranston East, 10-5, in a Division II contest. Coro, who went 3-for-4, had an inside-the-park homer, a triple and single while Joly hit a three-run homer that cleared the fence. •Freshman Alaina Denoncour had 13 strikeouts and walked only one and catcher Steph Carpentieri was 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored as the Johnston softball team defeated North Smithfield, 7-0. •Ashley Moreira had nine strikeouts and spread out five hits over five innings as the Mt. Hope softball team defeated Portsmouth, 19-1. •Second baseman Lindsay Bowder was 1-for-2 with two RBI and preserved a 4-3 softball win for Prout when she ranged to her left in the top of the seventh, snagged a lined shot, stood up and threw out Narragansett’s Samantha Essex before she could reach and the tying run could score from third base. •Moses Brown’s Jill Gately got the game going with a two-run homer in the first and the Quakers held on for a 3-1 softball win over West Warwick. |
