High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Wednesday, April 2309:05 AM EDT on Thursday, April 24, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Alex Patinkin scored all three of his goals in the game’s final six minutes as PCD rallied from a two-goal deficit for its first Division I boys lacrosse win of the season, an 11-9 victory over Mt. Hope. Down by 8-6 with six minutes to play, PCD got goals from Patinkin and Eric Vargas in a span of 50 seconds to tie it at 8-8. PCD then scored three goals in 1:05 to take an 11-8 lead. Patinkin made it 9-8 with 3:01 to play, then added another goal at 2:38. Patinkin finished with three goals and four assists while Walker Chafee had four goals. WINNER’S CIRCLE •Ponaganset’s Dan Lefebvre and Derek Rogala both hit home runs and the Chieftains’ baseball team withstood a late rally to defeat Mount Pleasant, 7-6. Lefebvre had three hits and three RBI and scored two runs while Rogala added another hit to his two-run homer in the sixth and also scored two runs. •North Smithfield had runners at first and third and executed a walk-off to give them a two-run lead in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 6-5 victory over Scituate in a Division II-North baseball game. On the play, Ben Ethier intentionally got into a pickle and Chris Nasuti broke for home and scored the game-winning run. Matt Okruta pitched 6 2/3 innings, struck out six and didn’t allow a walk in the win. Jeff Winchell hit a two-run homer in the third for the Spartans. •Kyle Van Rossum had a triple and a single and pitched four innings, giving up one run, to lead the Burrillville baseball team to a 3-1 victory over Johnston in Division II-North. The Broncos scored three runs in the sixth on RBI by Cam Laduc and Nick Harriman and a fielder’s-choice grounder by Scott Pupper. Zack Pacitto had two hits and an RBI for the Panthers. SPOTLIGHT •Anthony Tortalano threw six scoreless innings, helping the Exeter/West Greenwich baseball team to a 9-0 upset of Division I-South leading Central. Tortalano allowed just three hits and struck out nine. Joe Bourgeois led the offense with two hits and two RBI while Nick Dirocco added a solo homer. Central is now 8-2 while EWG improved to 6-3. •Lincoln clinched a 4-3 victory over Westerly in Division II boys tennis when the first doubles team of Nick Arnold and Colin Boisvert defeated their opponents, 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 6-3. The Lions improved to 6-1. •Prout’s third doubles duo, Max Dwyre and Alejandro DaSilva, clinched the match, 4-3, over Smithfield’s Carter Brague and Adam Feragne, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, improving the Crusaders to 4-4 in boys tennis. •Jordan Bicki and Carl Zielgler, in first doubles, defeated Tim Chapelle and Billy Hogan, 6-1, 6-3, as Providence Country Day nipped Middletown, 4-3, in boys tennis. •Division IV-South-leading Tiverton got a 7-6 (7-6), 5-7, 10-2 victory from Cody Pontes and Eric Kelly at first doubles as the Tigers improved to 6-1 with a 6-1 victory over Woonsocket in boys tennis. •Mark Capuano and Doug Caliri combined for 18 kills and 20 digs as Hendricken defeated Coventry, 3-2, in Division I volleyball. Coventry’s Shawn Gundmunson had 19 kills, and David McArdle had 36 assists for the Oakers. •John Caruolo had 8 kills and 14 assists while Dave Reynolds contributed 6 kills and 5 blocks as East Providence swept Chariho, 3-0, in Division I boys volleyball. •Mark Garlock had 15 kills and 13 digs and Dustin Baker had 30 assists and 5 aces to lead the East Greenwich boys volleyball team to a 3-0 win over South Kingstown. The Avengers improved to 5-1. •Five different players scored a goal for Classical as the Purple earned their first Division II girls lacrosse victory of the season with a 5-4 win over Westerly. Lezlie Harris led the Purple with a goal and an assist. Tina Seng, Zoe Beiser, Zoe Thompson and Sophia Blum also scored for Classical. •Pitcher Cassie Acciaoli knocked in the game-winning runs with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning and catcher Corinn Pimentel had two doubles, a triple and four RBI to lead the Smithfield softball team to a 10-8 victory over Burrillville. •Liz Kacz pitched a one-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts and went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI to lead Moses Brown to a 4-0 victory over North Providence in a Division II-North softball game. The Quakers improved to 7-0. •Olivia Gamache pitched a complete-game two-hitter, striking out 11, and Emily Caswell laced a two-run triple in the sixth inning as Prout topped Rogers, 3-0, in softball. •Brittany Lewis of Middletown allowed only three hits, struck out six and walked two on the way to a 7-0 win over Narragansett in girls softball. Jessica SanFilippo was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored, and Alex Butler was 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored for the Islanders. •Classical pitcher Hannah Cooney struck out seven and had a bunt single that produced an RBI in the second inning, and Kiara Apici kept the ball from getting out of the infield when it was hit her way, recording six putouts, as the Purple defeated Johnston, 4-1, in softball. |
