High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Thursday, April 2410:22 AM EDT on Friday, April 25, 2008GAME OF THE DAY Cranston East relief pitcher John Healy entered in the fourth inning, retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced, struck out six and scattered three hits that led to one earned run, which tied the score in the bottom of the seventh, but he got the win when Mike Dunphy hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the eighth for a 7-6 win over North Kingstown. WINNER’S CIRCLE •With one out in the top of the sixth inning, La Salle’s Matt Minese singled in two runs to tie the score and Brent Hopkins came to the plate later in the inning with two outs and singled in the go-ahead run as the Rams beat Tiverton, 8-7. The Rams’ Rob McGrath came on in relief in the fourth inning and shut down the Tiverton baseball team the rest of the way to earn the win. •Josh Perry’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth turned out to be the winning run for Barrington even though Woonsocket rallied in the seventh but fell just short as the Eagles posted a 5-4 win. Barrington’s Corey Gower pitched five scoreless innings and struck out five before leaving in the seventh. Josh Lebowitz had an RBI triple for the Eagles. •Anna Carr scored the last of her four goals with 1:17 left in regulation to give the East Greenwich girls lacrosse team a 6-5 win over Cranston West. Daria Huang made 18 saves for the Avengers and Guila Basile scored two goals and had an assist. Jenna Matisewski had two goals for the Falcons. SPOTLIGHT •Smithfield got RBI doubles from Matt Alcuskey and John Kashmanian during a four-run first inning as the Sentinels defeated East Providence, 7-5, in Division I baseball. Joe Landi had three hits for Smithfield. Brian Soderberg hit a two-run homer for East Providence. •Brad Van Fechtmann needed just 72 pitches to throw a two-hit shutout and his defense turned three double plays as East Greenwich blanked Toll Gate, 2-0, in Division I baseball. East Greenwich got a run in the first on anRBI double by Ted Cullinane and a run in the fifth on Mike DePasquale’s sacrifice fly. Drew Schoettler had two hits and stole three bases for East Greenwich. •Ryan Silva hit a double and Zack Trenteseaux hit a three-run inside-the-park homer as Lincoln’s baseball team topped Middletown, 9-7, in 10 innings. Andrew Ponte hit a two-run homer in the 10th for the Islanders.
•Steve Palumbo had a two-run single and Chris Eagleson a two-run triple in the second inning as Coventry beat West Warwick, 7-3, in baseball. The Wizards’ Anthony Giarusso entered in the second inning and allowed just one hit in five innings and struck out five. •It wasn’t until Mike Gaspar and Chris Bricault won their second doubles match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, that the East Providence boys tennis team clinched the 4-3 win over Narragansett. •Kathryn Field scored five goals and Anya Colucci added four as the North Kingstown girls lacrosse team defeated Mt. Hope, 16-11. •Portsmouth outscored Narragansett, 12-4, in the second half to turn a 4-2 halftime deficit into a 14-8 victory in Division II girls lacrosse. Julia Fraser led the Patriots with four goals while Olivia Ougheltree and Amanda Sylvia each scored three. •Kara Zuercher hit a triple in the seventh inning as Bay View defeated St. Raphael, 4-2, in softball. Kristen Mitchell hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for the Bengals. Marissa Mancini went 2-for-3 for the Saints. •Kelley Clancy pitched her second consecutive no-hitter, with 11 strikeouts, as East Providence beat Lincoln, 5-0, in softball. Ashley Curti hit a 3-run homer in the fifth inning and Marion Potter went 2-for-3 for the Townies. •Jenna Edine drove in what proved to be the winning run and Zeena Barbarita got a single that knocked in an insurance run as the La Salle softball team scored two in the fifth inning and blanked Cumberland, 2-0, in a Division I contest. The Rams’ Jordan Tingley went the distance and struck out 12. •Morgan Capalbo had a two-run single in the fourth and scored the winning run in the top of the seventh, helping North Kingstown to a 4-3 victory over Coventry in Division I softball. Lynn Pesola drove in all three of Coventry’s runs with a two-run double in the first and a bases-loaded walk in the third. •Kelly Ryan scattered three hits and struck out five, hit a home run in the top of the sixth to make it 2-2 and knocked in the winning run in the seventh with a single as Mount St. Charles rallied past Cranston West, 3-2, in a Division I softball game. •Stephanie Carpentier hit a solo home run in the fourth inning as Johnston nipped Moses Brown, 2-1, in softball. Carpentier hit a triple in the second, and Jill Gately scored the Quakers’ run. •Ponaganset broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning, including a two-run double by Mackenzie Quinn, as the Chieftains held off West Warwick for a 5-4 Division II softball win. •Samantha Morrell shot a 2-under-par 34 at Coventry Pines, leading North Kingstown to a South Division golf victory over Coventry. |
