High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights, Friday, April 2501:00 AM EDT on Saturday, April 26, 2008![]() The battle of the top two baseball teams in Division II-North didn’t disappoint, as league-leading North Smithfield and second-place Mount St. Charles combined for 35 hits and 25 runs in a 14-11 win for the Northmen. The Northmen’s Matt Okruta had four hits and three RBI, including the game-winning, two-run triple in the ninth inning. Brian Van Pelt came on in relief in the sixth inning for the Northmen, holding the Mounties scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Brendan Barry and Nick Naradowy each had three hits for North Smithfield. WINNER’S CIRCLE •Juanita Sanchez erased a 6-4 deficit with four runs in the top of the seventh inning as Juanita Sanchez rallied for an 8-6 victory over Central Falls in Division II baseball. Alfred Rodriguez tied it at 6-6 with a two-run double and Joan Medrano plated the game-winning run with a RBI single. Juanita Sanchez starter Johan Rosario, a freshman, pitched a complete game, allowing six runs on nine hits with six walks and 18 strikeouts. Edwin Rivera hit a two-run homer for Central Falls. •The final doubles match win of Aaron Rudnick and Robert Brown (6-4, 6-4) clinched the victory for the Classical boys tennis team, a 4-3 win over Chariho. •Portsmouth improved to 6-0 with a 7-0 win over St. Raphael, which slipped to 6-2, in a Division III-crossover boys tennis match. Portsmouth’s Scott Coleman also improved to 6-0 at second singles with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over Pat Gannon, who was previously undefeated. •North Providence scored 10 runs over the final three innings as the Cougars turned a 3-0 deficit into a 10-5 victory over West Warwick in Division II softball. Pam Emery tied it at 3-3 with a three-run homer in the fifth. Jenna Berthiume added a RBI single in the sixth and a two-run single in the seventh. Carissa McKendall led the Wizards, going 3-for-4 with a solo homer. •Justin Rainville and Jim Castonguay combined on the mound and at the plate to give Woonsocket a 2-0 win over Tiverton in Division I baseball. Rainville pitched the first five innings before handing it over to Castonguay. Together the two allowed only three hits and struck out seven, four by Castonguay, in the final two innings. With two outs in the fifth inning, Rainville knocked in Castonguay with a single, providing an insurance run before Castonguay came in and shut down the Tigers. SPOTLIGHT •Portsmouth starting pitcher John Pedrotty went the distance, giving up just two hits while fanning eight batters and added two hits and three RBI to lead the Patriots over St. Raphael, 9-3, in a Division I baseball game. Ryan Westmoreland had a home run and a single and Ben Grande had two doubles and a single for Portsmouth. •J.T. Madonna went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored and teammate Jeremy Ladas went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Cranston East baseball team to a 12-7 victory over Westerly. •Bobby DiCicco was the winning pitcher and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI as Johnston defeated Davies, 10-6, in Division II baseball. Zach Pacitto also had three hits for Johnston and drove in two runs. •Sean Quinn’s sacrifice fly drove in Dan Oliveira for the winning run in the eighth inning for Providence Country Day over Shea, 4-3, in baseball. •Sean Murray scored three goals and assisted on three others as the Hawks improved to 6-1 with a 14-3 victory over Wheeler in a Division I boys lacrosse match. The Warriors fell to 5-3. •Dan Spader was down, 9-3, in the third set tie-breaker but never lost a point after that to win the final set, 11-9, as the Cumberland tennis team moves to 9-0 on the season with a 5-2 win over Toll Gate. •Shawn Gudmundson had 21 kills and 28 digs and Dave McArdle made 47 assists as the Coventry boys volleyball team defeated East Providence, 3-2. •North Kingstown’s Dan Tisser had 11 kills and 2 blocks and Brett Stetson had 6 kills, 5 blocks and 4 aces as the Skippers defeated East Greenwich, 3-1, in volleyball. The Avengers’ Mark Garlock had 20 kills and 21 digs and Dustin Baker had 36 assists and 12 digs. •Sarah Beron scored six goals and Jessalyn O’Neil had five to lead the North Providence girls lacrosse team to a 14-4 win over East Providence. •Jess Rubine, Courtney Sherman and Chloe Schmitz each scored three goals, helping Moses Brown to a 16-5 victory over Mt. Hope in girls lacrosse. •Kaela Gentile had 2 triples, and a double with four RBI for Ponaganset over Smithfield, 13-2, in softball. Courtney Piccirillo had 7 strikeouts and allowed one walk for the Chieftains, improving to 7-1. |
