High School Sports NewsHigh school highlights: Saturday, April 2609:45 AM EDT on Sunday, April 27, 2008GAME OF THE DAY With two outs in the fifth inning and tied 4-4 with Hendricken, the North Kingstown baseball team strung together six hits in a row and plated four runners, then held on behind starting pitcher Cody Normand for the 8-5 win over the undefeated Hawks. Normand scattered nine hits over seven innings as the Skippers remain one game back of South Kingstown in Division I-South after the Rebels took a win at Cranston West, leaving Portsmouth the lone undefeated team in Division I. WINNER'S CIRCLE •South Kingstown scored 11 runs in the game’s final four innings as the Rebels posted a 16-4 victory over Cranston West in Division I baseball. South Kingstown, 10-1 in Division I-South, led 5-4 after two innings before scoring three in the fourth and getting four runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Brian Lessard led the 13-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI. James McKinney had two hits and two RBI for the Rebels. Cranston West falls to 8-2 in Division I-West. •Freshman Becky Williams gave up only four hits while striking out seven and her batterymate, Amanda Dolan, took care of all the offense with a two-run homer in the third inning as the Chariho softball team defeated Cranston West, 2-1, earning Williams her fourth win of the season. •Chariho’s Jake Blanding struck out nine, including two batters in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on and no one out before getting the final batter to ground out, stranding the winning runs on base as the Chargers held on for a 4-3 win over Warwick. Blanding’s counterpart, Kevin Dale of Warwick, struck out 10 and after a rough first two innings settled down and didn’t allow another run. •St. Raphael’s Danielle Lotti had a no-hitter going through five innings, struck out 10, allowed only two hits and proved to get what was the winning run when she hit an RBI-double in the first inning as the Saints defeated North Kingstown, 4-0. •Mike DePasquale reached on a seventh-inning error and came around to score the game-winning run on James Kerin’s groundout as East Greenwich produced a 3-2 victory over Coventry in Division I baseball. Kerin also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. East Greenwich starter Brendan Murray threw a complete-game four-hitter. •Unbeaten Bay View got single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to defeat Mount St. Charles, 4-3, in a battle of Division I contenders. Mount (5-2) erased a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run triple from Becca Ashley. Bay View (7-0) tied it in the bottom of the seventh on a Kelly Mitchell single, then won it in the eighth when Marlene DiRaimo singled down the left-field line to score Jazz Clarke. SPOTLIGHT •Tom Darnowski and Robert Maggiacomo each drove in three runs while Brent Hopkins had two RBI as La Salle outslugged East Providence, 15-11, in a Division I baseball game that featured 26 runs, 23 hits and 9 errors. Cam Costa hit a grand slam for the Townies while Jared Sylvia and Mike Fisher each had two RBI. •Billy Cosmopulos pitched a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts while Luke Martin (three hits), Sam Sager and Dan Brookfield each drove in a pair of runs in Moses Brown’s 7-2 victory over Lincoln in Division I baseball. •Jack Nottage allowed just two hits and struck out five over six scoreless innings while batterymate Randy Hoxsie had two hits and two RBI in Pilgrim’s 8-0 victory over West Warwick in Division I baseball. Kevin Stenhouse added two doubles and two runs scored for the Patriots. •Narragansett’s Julien Nelson hit a two-run single in the top of the eighth inning to break open a 2-2 tie and Jay Jeannotte held on for the 4-2 complete game Division I win over Toll Gate. •Ali Burdick, Hayleigh Meeker and Cassie Baker each had RBI doubles during a five-run fifth inning as Westerly defeated Warwick, 7-4, in Division I softball. •Freshman pitcher Alyssa McCoart allowed just one hit, struck out five and chipped in with three hits and three RBI as her Lincoln Lions defeated South Kingstown 12-0. Her batterymate, Brianna Ferri, also had three hits, just missing hitting for the cycle with a single, double, triple and two RBI. •Amanda Marble was 3-for-3 with three RBI and Jordan Allen was 3-for-4 with an RBI as the Toll Gate softball team held on for a 7-6 road win over Woonsocket. |
