South Kingstown, the nine-time defending state champion, overcame a 3-2 deficit with wins at second and third doubles. The Rebels’ third doubles team of Michael Mulroy and Alex Kam won, 7-5, 6-1, to tie it at 3-3 and the second doubles team of Yosuke Kurokawa and Eric Troob clinched the decisive point with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory. South Kingstown is now 5-0 while Barrington falls to 4-1. WINNER’S CIRCLE •Pilgrim scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh, rallying for a 6-5 victory over Woonsocket in Division I softball. Pilgrim, which trailed, 5-3, in the sixth, tied it at 5-5 on MyKayla Ellsworth’s single and a sacrifice fly from Catherine Fowler. Pilgrim won it when Leah Furney singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error. Furney was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Woonsocket pitcher Nicole Boucher struck out 12 in her complete-game effort. •Lou Barry’s two-run single in the top of the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and Mt. Hope held on over the final two innings for a 3-2 victory over Davies in Division II baseball. •Dave Manoni and Seth Richards broke a 3-3 tie by winning, 6-2, 7-5, at third doubles, lifting the North Kingstown boys tennis team to a 4-3 win over Mount St. Charles in a Division I match. •East Providence overcame a 3-0 deficit by sweeping all the doubles matches en route to a 4-3 victory over Shea in Division III boys tennis. East Providence’s third doubles team of Kyle Walmsley and Kevin Tente captured the winning point with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. SPOTLIGHT •Bobby DeCicco scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk as Johnston trimmed North Smithfield, 6-5, in baseball. •Pedro Luna had three hits and drove in Greg Estevez with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Central topped Juanita Sanchez, 11-10, in baseball. •PCD dropped the first two singles matches but rallied to win four of the final five matches, including the fourth and decisive point from the first doubles team of Earl Ziegler and Jordan Bicki (6-4, 6-1), as the Knights edged Woonsocket, 4-3, in boys tennis. •Cody Pontes and Dan Tierney clinched the decisive point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at first doubles as Tiverton held off West Warwick, 4-3, in boys tennis. Junior Mike Roderick, who normally plays second doubles, moved to fourth singles and posted a three-set victory, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5. •Corey Gardner finished with 15 kills and 3 aces, Ben Korry added 10 kills and Matt Coates chipped in 6 kills as Pilgrim needed five sets to defeat Cranston East, 3-2, in boys volleyball. •Ali Burdick allowed only four hits while fanning 14 and had an RBI single in the first inning as South Kingstown shut out Westerly, 3-0, in softball. Heather Imperatore added an RBI single in the fifth. •Patrick Onye won four of the five events, the individual title and led Classical to the team title at the boys outdoor track Thrower’s Pentathlon at Cumberland High School. |
