Swimming NewsJohn Gillooly: Beisel, Sogar take R.I. swimming to a new level11:20 PM EDT on Monday, May 18, 2009I have learned to never say never when it comes to the possible accomplishments of Rhode Island high school student/athletes. But even so, I find it hard to believe that there will ever be another time when two Rhode Island high school students are as accomplished at the same time on the national level of a sport as North Kingstown’s Elizabeth Beisel and Prout’s Laura Sogar have been this year in swimming. Forget national high school competition, these young ladies are two of the best female swimmers in the country, period. This past weekend, with the national media focusing on the Charlotte UltraSwim championships because Michael Phelps was making his first appearance after a three-month suspension, the two Rhode Island kids won a combined total of three individual championships. Saturday night both Beisel and Sogar won gold medals. Beisel, the North Kingstown junior who was a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic swim team, won the 100-meter backstroke title and Sogar, the Prout senior who is headed to the University of Texas in the fall, captured the 200-meter breaststroke crown. Sunday night, on the final night of the meet, Beisel came back and added the 200-meter backstroke title to her long list of accomplishments. Beisel also had a second place finish in the 400-meter individual medley plus a pair of top eight finishes in two other events. In a state the size of Rhode Island, I just don’t think it ever can get better than this. When North meets South Hopefully Mother Nature co-operates because the South Kingstown and North Kingstown baseball teams deserve a sunny day for their Wednesday afternoon showdown for the Division I-South regular season game. Game time is 3:45 at North Kingstown’s Lischio Field. Meo's record: 8-2 Former Cranston West All-State pitcher Anthony Meo, now pitching for Coastal Carolina University, upped his freshman record to 8-2 on Saturday as he tossed five innings of two-hit ball in Coastal Carolina’s 3-1 victory over Charleston Southern. The victory upped Coastal Carolina’s record to 42-13 and clinched the No. 1 seed for the Big South tournament, which begins this week. Coastal Carolina was ranked 23rd in last week’s USA Today-ESPN Division I national college baseball poll. Meo now has a 2.96 ERA in 67 innings on the mound this season. He has struck out 60 and walked only 28. Sager helps Jumbos Meo isn’t the only former All-State baseball player having a great freshman collegiate season. Sam Sager, the former Moses Brown All-State infielder, started every game at second base for Tufts this season and played a big role in Jumbos reaching the title game of the NESCAC tournament. Sager hit .333 in his first collegiate season, including a .444 performance in the conference tournament, and made only three errors all season. Tufts lost to Trinity, the defending Division III NCAA national champion, in the NESCAC tournament championship game. Athlete of the Week Her six goals for the Barrington girls lacrosse team in the Eagles 12-11 victory over defending state champion Moses Brown last week has earned Becky Bracken the projo.com HS GameTime Athlete of the Week honor. Burke to Philadephia U. South Kingstown senior Kyle Burke, who won his third consecutive Interscholastic League state singles tennis title last week, has decided to take his racquet to Philadelphia University where he will study architecture. Philadelphia U. is a Division II school that won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s tennis title this spring. Before he heads to Philly, however, Burke will be trying to lead the South Kingstown boys tennis team to its 11th consecutive Division I state title this week. The South Kingstown string of 10 straight net titles is the longest consecutive string of undisputed state championships by any public high school team in the history of R.I. Interscholastic League play. The Rebels posted a perfect 12-0 in regular season play this year. The Division I title match is scheduled for Saturday at 1 o’clock at Slater Park. The Division IV title also will be decided Saturday at Slater at 10 a.m. The other divisional state titles also will be decided over the Memorial Day weekend at Slater. The Division III tourney championship is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. and the Division II title match is slated for Monday at 11 a.m. Sternberg picked for showcase North Kingstown High’s Ben Sternberg is one of 96 high school senior boys lacrosse players from throughout the country selected to play in the US Lacrosse National High School Senior Showcase that will be played at Bryant University on June 29. Sternberg, who will attend Bryant in the fall, will play for the East Team in the four-team, one-day tourney. He is the only Rhode Island player selected to play in the tournament. Sternberg earned Rhode Island All-State and high school All-American honors last spring when he led North Kingstown to the Division I boys state lacrosse title. |
