Swimming NewsHendricken captures 20th straight boys swimming title12:42 PM EST on Monday, February 16, 2009SOUTH KINGSTOWN –– East Greenwich’s Jeff Winters, South Kingstown’s Kevin Sun, Narragansett’s Luca Spinazzola and La Salle’s Paolo DeLuca rewrote the individual record book, but Hendricken maintained the status quo when it came to the team issue as the Hawks captured their 20th consecutive state team title at yesterday’s R.I. Interscholastic League boys state swim championship. ExtraWinters, Sun, Spinazzola and DeLuca combined to set seven individual state records, as Winters, Sun and Spinazzola each set two new marks and DeLuca set one record and also just missed another record en route to a second individual state title. “The development of boys swimming up and down the line is amazing,” veteran East Providence coach Sandy Gorham said about the day filled with record setting performances. Hendricken might not have had any record setters; in fact the Hawks didn’t win any individual titles or any of the three relays. But once again they relied on their outstanding depth for another state team title. Combining at least two scorers in each of the eight individual events with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay and a third in the 200-yard medley relay, the Hawks piled up 315 points for a 39-point margin over second-place Barrington. East Greenwich placed third, with 212 points. “Our kids swam super,” said veteran Hendricken coach Dave Hanson. “Our seniors did an absolutely fantastic job. Going in, if seeds held, we would have won by 26 points and we did better than that.” Dimitrius Palmer’s second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle and a fourth in the butterfly was the top individual contribution to the Hawks’ title drive. Ian Dinwoodie also delivered a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. Palmer also was a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay that placed second to East Greenwich and the third-place medley relay that finished behind La Salle and Barrington. Dave Evans, Matt Maxwell and Matt Huff joined him on the medley relay team, and Huff, Hunter Lemoi and Brett Stainken teamed with Palmer on the 200 freestyle squad. But while Hendricken was methodically piling up points, the excitement was created by the record-setting individual performances. New state marks were set in seven of the eight individual events as Winters set marks in the 100 and 200 freestyles, Sun in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, Spinazzola in the 500 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, and DeLuca in the 100 breaststroke. Winters, a senior, started off his impressive day’s work in the first individual race of the day as his 1:42.66 in the 200 freestyle broke the record of 1:43.09 set by former Lincoln High star Colin Shannahan in 1998. Two races later, Sun, also a senior, broke the 50 freestyle record of 21.56 seconds that Winters had set this season with a 21.42 effort. Then, after a 10-minute break in the competition, Sun came right back and set a new mark in the 100 butterfly as he took over a second off the 11-year-old mark of former East Providence star Corey Blakely with a 50.51 performance. “I had my eyes on them since the beginning of the season,” Sun said about his quest to put his mark on the Interscholastic League record books. “My best times were faster, so I was pretty confident I could get them as long as my goggles didn’t fall off or my suit break or anything like that,” Sun added with a laugh. Winters followed Sun’s butterfly performance by taking nearly two/tenths of a second off the 100-yard freestyle record with a 46.66 effort. Winters also was a member of two state championship relays, joining with Alex Kurose, Greg Passa and Tom Paradise for the 200 freestyle title, and Pardise, Kurose and Mike Pallini for the 400 freestyle-relay crown. Spinazzola, a sophomore whose younger sister Bianca won two individual titles at Saturday’s girls state championships, made it a family golden weekend as he delivered a 52.09 record effort en route to the 100 backstroke title and setting a new mark in the 500 freestyle with a 4:37.32 performance. DeLuca won the 200 individual medley with a comfortable four seconds, then he took 1½ seconds off the state record in the 100 breaststroke with a 56.38 performance. The La Salle team of Jordon Santanna, Dan Lavey, Paul Gemma and George Koutros captured the 200-yard medley relay as Koutros, swimming the freestyle anchor leg, held off a surge by Barrington’s Andrew Zulke.
