Swimming NewsHigh school highlights -- Barrington swimmers hand Bay View its first loss09:18 AM EST on Tuesday, January 13, 2009GAME OF THE DAY Barrington knocked Bay View out of first place in Division I girls swimming as the Eagles defeated the previously unbeaten Bengals, 57-37. Barrington is now 2-1 while Bay View falls to 4-1. Barrington’s Natalie Kaiser won the 50 free and 100 backstroke while Meredith Nyser captured the 100 and 200 freestyles. The duo also led the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays to victory. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Tiverton erased an 11-point halftime deficit as Alex Jarman and Zach Guillette each scored 18 points and the Tigers rallied for a 59-55 victory over East Greenwich in Division II boys basketball. Jarman scored 12 of his 18 in the second half and made several buckets in the closing minutes to put Tiverton ahead for good. Tiverton held East Greenwich’s leading scorer Brad Van Fechtman without a basket as he managed just a pair of free throws. Kyle Kelaghan led East Greenwich with 18 points. •North Providence improved to 4-0 in Division III girls swimming with a 50-44 victory over Classical. Jessica Hanch led the way for the Cougars as the sophomore won the 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke and was part of the winning 200 free relay. •Barrington took over sole possession of first place in Metropolitan Division boys indoor track with wins over Classical and La Salle. Sid Griffin won two events (1000 and 1500) to lead the Eagles. Barrington is now 4-0, La Salle is 2-1 and Classical is 2-2. •Xavier Rodriguez won the 45 dash, 300 meters, the high jump and led the 4x160 relay to a first-place finish as the Mount Pleasant junior paced the Kilties to wins over Moses Brown and East Providence in Metropolitan Division boys indoor track. SPOTLIGHT •Tom Paridine and Jeff Winters each won two individual events and also took part in two winning relays to help lead East Greenwich to a 55-39 win over Cumberland in boys swimming. •Jeff Laliberte won the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly while Mitchell Vieira captured the 50 and 100 free as the duo led North Providence past Classical, 54-40, in boys swimming. •Ashley O’Dell scored 33 points, had 6 steals and 6 assists and Stepanie Prusko had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds as Lincoln rolled over Classical, 61-39, in girls basketball. •Valerie Biascochea scored 17 points and had 14 rebounds to help Central Falls to a 41-28 victory over Rocky Hill. Halie Webb had a career-high 19 boards for the Warriors. •Brooke Smalley earned wins in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, and also contributed to victories in the 200 medley and 400 free relays as the Cumberland girls swam past East Greenwich, 64-39. •Amy Maine was victorious in the 50 free and 100 butterly as Tolman edged Shea, 49-45, in Division III girls swimming. •Nigel Edwards and Nick Sienkiewicz combined for 31 points as Providence Country Day defeated Hyde, the defending SENE champions, 60-54, in boys basketball. |
