Hope in dramatic fashion08:59 AM EST on Thursday, January 29, 2009GAME OF THE DAY Heroics at the end of regulation and at the buzzer of overtime gave unbeaten Barrington a 48-46 victory over Mt. Hope in a Division II-East girls basketball duel. The Eagles’ Catherine Matthews drained a 3-pointer with four second left in regulation to tie the score and send the game into o.t., where Julie Moss’s baseline jumper as time expired gave Barrington the win. Kelly Mannix, who was held to just three points in the first half, scored seven in the second and five of Barrington’s seven points in overtime for a game-high 15 points. Matthews finished with 14 and Moss had 11. Mara Newland and Kayla Whiting each had 10 points for the Huskies, who led 22-14 at halftime and all of the second half before Matthews tied it. WINNERS’ CIRCLE •Cranston West came back from a 30-0 deficit and defeated North Providence, 42-39, in a Division I-A wrestling match. After losing the first five matches, the Falcons finally got on the board with a pin by John Coleman at heavyweight. From there, West won the next five and took a 42-36 lead en route to victory. Key pins for the Falcons came at 112 from Steve Durand and 119 from Derek Patalano. West improved to 9-1 and will host undefeated Cumberland next Thursday. •Coventry won the first seven matches, including pins from Nick Bottella (112), Anthony Rioles (135) and Mitchell Sinnott (140), as the Oakers rolled to a 54-24 win over Cranston East in wrestling. SPOTLIGHT •Trevor Kenyon and Ben Evangelista each won two individual events and participated in the winning 200 medley and 200 free relays for North Kingstown, but the the East Greenwich boys swim team won the meet, 50.5-43.5. Kenyon won the 50 free (25.04) and 100 free (54.14) while Evangelista took the 200 IM (2:15.74) and 500 free (5:39.43). The 100 backstroke featured a tie between NK’s Garret Graham and EG’s Nick Bodell-Kudla. •La Salle’s Torey Jones had 8 of her game-high 17 points in the first two minutes of the game, including her 1,000th career point, as the Rams defeated Cumberland, 59-20, in Division I girls basketball. Jones didn’t waste any time notching her 1,000th point as she knocked down a 3-pointer in the opening minute followed by another bucket and a 3-pointer to reach the milestone. •Julia Maguire netted a game-high 23 points and Leah Davis had all 15 of her points on 3-pointers as Cranston East held off Coventry, 50-48, in Division I girls basketball. Hannah Cole led Coventry with 20 points. |
