A-TEAM ATHLETEMatthew Wiens10:58 AM PST on Saturday, March 8, 2008Mercer Island won the boy's 3A swimming title a couple weeks ago, but also won something else. A big reason for that second win is Matthew Wiens' 3.97 GPA. Matthew now joins the Sylvan A-Team. Last month the Mercer Island High School boys swimming team won their third consecutive state championship, but before the meet even finished they had already received the award for best team GPA, thanks in part to Matthew's high GPA. Mathew's specialty? The 500 freestyle, a discipline in which he took 11th at state. With a good crop of sophomores and juniors returning, Weins can't wait until next year, when the Islanders get to defend their state titles all over again. He started swimming when he was just 2 years old and he has no plans to hang up the swimsuit after high school. He hopes to become a masters swimmer when he gets older.
