TOP STORIESHanford pulls out foul-filled game to win over Ferndale10:12 PM PST on Wednesday, March 5, 2008SEATTLE (AP) -- It came down to free throws in a game that saw as many points scored from the floor as from the free throw line, and Hanford barely hung on to beat Ferndale 42-38 in the first round of the Class 3A girls state tournament on Wednesday. The Falcons used an 8-0 run to push themselves ahead late in the fourth quarter, a lead they would not relinquish. Hanford made 19 of 23 second-half free throws while Ferndale was just 9 of 19. The Falcons shot as many total free throws (27) as field goals. Forty-eight fouls were called in the game. Senior Chelsey DePeel lead all scorers with 17 points for Hanford, and Kristin Barott added 10. Freshman Ericka Locker had 10 for Ferndale. Hanford nearly tied the record the record for fewest points in a quarter, scoring just two in the opening period. The record is zero, done four times. The Falcons rallied in the third quarter, scoring 17 points to take the lead. They pushed the lead to eight. Ferndale closed the gap, but couldn't catch Hanford. University of Washington quarterback Jake Locker attended the game to watch his alma mater, Ferndale, and the three Lockers on the roster. Stats Ferndale(38) E.
