TOP STORIES3A girls: Lakes uses huge third quarter and rolls to fourth place05:40 PM PST on Saturday, March 8, 2008SEATTLE - Sara Halasz scored 23 points, including six straight during a 21-1 third-quarter run, as Lakes took fourth place in the Class 3A girls state tournament on Saturday with a 71-60 win over Kamiakin. Chene Cooper added 15 points, and also had six points during the game-changing surge. Halasz also grabbed 10 rebounds. Brit-tani Terry had 12 points, and Brianna Morrison chipped in 11 for the Lancers. The trophy was the third in school history for Lakes (24-2), which lost to defending champion Auburn Riverside in the quarterfinals on Thursday, then came back to win twice in the consolation bracket. The last time the Lancers earned state hardware was in 1993 when it placed fifth. Tina Miller led Kamiakin (16-13) with 20 points. The Braves, who took seventh, gained their 10th state trophy, and their first since taking fifth in 1999. Lakes led throughout, but put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Up just 36-31 early in the third, the Lancers scored six straight points, saw Kamiakin hit a free throw to make it 42-32, then ran off the next 15 points, expanding its lead to 57-32. The Braves attempted a comeback during the fourth quarter, but never got any closer than nine points.
