TOP STORIES3A girls: Meadowdale pulls away late to take fifth place05:42 PM PST on Saturday, March 8, 2008SEATTLE - Eryn Jones' three-point play at the end of the third quarter put Meadowdale ahead for good as the Mavericks beat Lakeside of Seattle 39-30 on Saturday for fifth place in the Class 3A girls state tournament. Jones, who was held well below her average of 22 points, and Alli Streit each had eight points to lead the Mavericks (24-5). Meadowdale lost to Lakes in a first-round battle of ranked teams, 59-56, then bounced back to win three straight on the consolation side for the 13th state trophy in school history. Jones came into the tournament averaging 22.4 points and scored 23, 25 and 25 in Meadowdale's first three games. Lakeside (23-7) was led by the 10 points of Morgan Merriman and took eighth place. It is the school's 12th state trophy, but its first since the Lions won the title in 2003. Madeline Barnes added nine points. Merriman made it a double-double with 15 rebounds. In a cold-shooting game for both teams, Meadowdale was down 24-23 late in the third quarter. Jones, who until that point hadn't scored, followed her own miss with a putback and was fouled. She hit the free throw, starting the Mavericks on a 9-0 run for a 32-24 lead. The Lions closed to 32-28 with 1:11 left, but Jones then factored into another three-point play, feeding Denica Coronacion for the basket. She was fouled on the play and converted, making it 35-28 with 47.8 seconds left. MEADOWDALE (39) Coronacion 7, J. Fjortoft 2, Jones 8, Carlow 0, H.
