Raid on Big 12 coaches?
If Big 12 football were a Fortune 500 company, it might have qualified for a federal bailout this year.

Nick Jones and Abilene Christian will face Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Mo., on Saturday in a second-round NCAA Division II playoff game.
Abilene Christian University

Abilene Christian defensive end Nick Jones used to wonder what his father looked like, how he sounded, what kind of man he was, writes Kevin Sherrington. On Friday morning, over breakfast in a small Missouri town, Jones will know.

Frogs legit, but don't expect a jump into BCS title game

TCU's win last week over Utah convinced Kevin Sherrington that these aren't your typical post-SWC Horned Frogs.

Unless the Earth comes off its axis, Texas will play an SEC team for the national title. And, for the third time in six years, another team will post a perfect season and screw up the arguments BCS backers might venture. That team will be TCU, writes Kevin Sherrington.

Sooners-ex is game to serve her nation
Five years ago, Caton Hill was heading into her senior season at Oklahoma, where she'd finish as one of the most prolific basketball players in Sooner history, writes Kevin Sherrington. Four years ago, she joined the Army, like her father and uncle before her, to serve her country and pay for medical school.

Behind former track star's kick-blocking, SMU bids to end 25-year bowl drought
It's hard to believe, writes Kevin Sherrington, but if SMU beats UTEP today the win would make the Mustangs bowl-eligible. That would be SMU's first bowl invitation in a quarter century.

TCU, non-BCS schools must be careful what they wish for

With the help of Jerry Hughes (right), TCU and head coach Gary Patterson are ranked No. 4 in the BCS standings.
RON JENKINS / Special to DMN

TCU's Gary Patterson has the perfect pulpit to make a case for his Horned Frogs and the rest of the BCS busters out there. But Patterson isn't interested in making a stink, and I don't blame him, writes Kevin Sherrington.

A Texas legend turns 90
The massive oak roll-top desk he bought off a Baptist preacher a half-century ago for 50 bucks serves mostly as a prop these days. A bottle of Yellow Tail rests where something harder left a ring. The drawer that once holstered a fast-action Royal is stuck shut.

A Texas legend turns 90
Except for occasional e-mails to old pals, the best Texas sportswriter ever doesn't write anymore, writes Kevin Sherrington. Blackie Sherrod's hair is white and wispy now, the gait deliberate, his hearing almost shot. But as his lovely wife, Joyce, puts it, he ain't doing bad for a guy who turns 90 on Monday.

Class acts: Competitive spirit gives way to caring after volleyball player's injury

Morgan Ashbreck's East Texas Christian Academy teammates decided to forfeit a volleyball match after she suffered a concussion. Their opponents graciously offered to resume the match at a later date.

Moments earlier, nothing meant more to East Texas Christian and Summit Christian Academy of Cedar Park than winning a TAPPS Class 2A girls bi-district volleyball match. Then East Texas Christian's Morgan Ashbreck hit the floor and suffered a concussion. For both teams, winning took a backseat to caring, devotion, sportsmanship and class, writes Kevin Sherrington.

When Texas Rangers make new hire, don't expect an instant hit

Rudy Jaramillo (left), pictured here in 1998, was the Rangers' hitting coach for 15 seasons. Former Ranger Rusty Greer (right) is a candidate to become the team's new hitting instructor.
DMN FILE PHOTO

Whether it's Rusty Greer, Clint Hurdle, Thad Bosley or Gerald Perry, the Texas Rangers' new hitting instructor had better be long on patience and short on bluster, writes Kevin Sherrington. And don't expect results as swift as pitching coach Mike Maddux got last season.

UT's path to BCS title game couldn't be more rosy
Mike Gundy made it clear what he thought of Texas' national title aspirations by going for it on fourth down three times in the first half Saturday, the first time from his own 28. And that was on Oklahoma State's first drive .

For local men, a signature mission
The first time he raised a big wad of cash for Special Olympics, Jim Albright flew 70,000 miles with a football to get the autographs of every living Heisman Trophy winner, including O.J. Simpson.

Dallas Mavericks appear more talented but so does the West

Carl Landry (right) and the Houston Rockets are just one of the obstacles for Dirk Nowitzki and the new-look Dallas Mavericks.
AP

The Dallas Mavericks really do appear more talented than the bunch that blew the '06 Finals. Deeper and more diverse, they're much better suited to the style of the coach. But everyone else is better, too, writes Kevin Sherrington.

Austin awesome again in Dallas Cowboys' 37-21 win

Atlanta's Thomas DeCoud watches Miles Austin score a touchdown in the second quarter for the Dallas Cowboys.
MICHAEL AINSWORTH / DMN

After the Dallas Cowboys' 37-21 win Sunday, all anyone could talk about when describing the first half was Miles Austin's 59-yard touchdown catch and what it did for the Cowboys' confidence, writes Kevin Sherrington. Funny how one player can change your perspective.

Dallas Cowboys reveal flaws, but they're hardly alone
Other than the fact that it was an extremely bad week for Patrick Crayton, who lost not one job but two, and a loud week for the owner, here's what we know for sure about the Dallas Cowboys going into today's game at JerryWorld, writes Kevin Sherrington: They have to beat the Falcons. Or maybe they don't.

Stolen memories: Former coach Zoffuto battling dementia, but his deeds not forgotten

Mike Zoffuto, during an interview at Canyonview Estates Retirement & Assisted Living Community in Amarillo in 2009, talks about photos picturing teams he once coached.
MATT STRASEN / Special to DMN

Mike Zoffuto looks older, but not old enough to be living in an assisted living center, writes columnist Kevin Sherrington. Zoffuto, a former head coach at W.T. White and Lake Highlands among others, is 62. Doctors have suggested that he is a rare victim of early-onset Alzheimer's.

Sooners' Bradford deserved a better ending

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford reinjured his throwing shoulder when sacked in the first quarter and watched most of the game from the sidelines.
BRAD LOPER / DMN

This is not how Sam Bradford envisioned it might end, writes Kevin Sherrington. He reinjures his shoulder. His season might be over. His career at Oklahoma? "I can't answer that," said Bradford, reduced to watching helplessly as a winnable game against Texas slipped away. What a shame.

Last year proved Red River Rivalry can be a win-win situation
Five times already this decade, either Texas or Oklahoma has played in the BCS title game, writes Kevin Sherrington. How does that record rate in the history of this state's greatest annual sporting event? The only decade that comes close is the '70s.

'Brain drain' doesn't hold water as reason for OU's 3-2 mark

Bob Stoops' Oklahoma teams have lost three of the last four Red River Rivalry showdowns against Texas.
LOUIS DeLUCA / DMN

"Brain drain" - the loss of talented assistant coaches - isn't to blame for Oklahoma's 3-2 record heading into Saturday's Red River Rivalry against Texas, writes Kevin Sherrington. OU, playing away from Norman with a freshman quarterback, simply got beat by two good teams.

Oklahoma State imbroglio adds to Big 12's troubles

The NCAA has indefinitely suspended Oklahoma State's Dez Bryant, who won't be playing against Texas A&M.
AP

Nothing incites a first-rate intraleague rivalry quite like the notion that one school has ratted out another, writes Kevin Sherrington, a practice that ruined the Southwest Conference but could pump up ratings in College Station. Oklahoma State plays Texas A&M today (11:30 a..m., FSSW).

Spoiled sports: NCAA taking taunting penalties to extremes

Back judge Michael Watson reaches for his flag during Georgia's end zone celebration against LSU.
AP

While trying to root out excessive ego, the NCAA is fighting a cultural war it can't win. In the process, it's whittling away at what makes its athletic endeavors great, writes Kevin Sherrington.

Dallas Cowboys' offense bridled by Broncos in 17-10 loss

-IMAGECUTLINE-
TOM FOX / DMN

With the game on the line Sunday, Tony Romo tried to put it all in the hands of ... Sam Hurd. Against Champ Bailey. It was no contest, like the match-up of the Cowboys' offense with the Broncos' defense in a 17-10 loss, writes Kevin Sherrington.

QB Johnson, Aggies still a work in progress
In the long and not-so-storied history between Texas A&M and Arkansas that was resuscitated Saturday at JerryWorld, the game wasn't big, but the quarterbacks sure were.

Dallas Cowboys' Romo could learn from Broncos QB Orton

Tony Romo's quarterback rating has fluctuated wildly this season, while Denver's Kyle Orton's (right) lowest has been 83.5.
TOM FOX / DMN / AP

Tony Romo's wild vacillations in performance - a Hall of Fame 140.6 quarterback rating in the opener, an awful 29.6 against the Giants, a competent 89.8 vs. Carolina - have some critics wishing for consistency. Perhaps Romo should be a bit more like Denver's Kyle Orton, writes Kevin Sherrington.

In four games, all losses, Texas College has been outscored, 287-12. The worst was a 92-0 pounding by Stephen F. Austin. But hardest of all, writes Kevin Sherrington, is remembering what you once were.

When Barry Horn wrote in February about Cody Novak and the cancer that was running wild in him, writes Kevin Sherrington, some characteristics of the Prestonwood Christian Academy senior and his family easily stood out. Rangers catcher Ivan Rodriguez chases a wild pitch in the first inning.

The Rangers are down, but seven of their remaining 17 games are against the American League West-leading Los Angeles Angels.
