Five weeks ago, Phil Mickelson had a chance to win a big golf tournament on his home course. He crumbled at the U.S. Open. On Thursday, 15-year-old Isaiah Huerta had a similar opportunity. He soared. After opening with a 5-under 66 on Wednesday, the St. Mark's freshman capped off the 14-15 flight of the 85th annual Dallas Junior Golf Championship at Cedar Crest with a 72 and a nine-shot victory over Jake Gorman. "If I'm out here this long, I should be shooting around these numbers," Huerta said. "I kind of expected it." But even with his familiarity with the tournament and the course, he said he still felt pressure to perform in front of his friends. "I know most of the people out here," said Huerta, who won his second title in the Dallas Junior Golf Championship in three years. "I'm just glad that they know that I played good." Huerta said he hopes to use the win as a springboard toward his ultimate goal of qualifying for the Junior World Championships next year. "I'm looking forward to future tournaments," Huerta said. "I'm trying to take these scores and take them out to those bigger tournaments ... and be more consistent." Playing up: Grace Choi is only 13, but she is playing in the Open Division (ages 15-18). She overcame a four-shot deficit with a 3-under 68 to enter today's final round tied for first with Carrollton Creekview's Paige Gibson. Briefly: In the Boys 10-11 flight, Garrett Landers rallied from five shots down to force a playoff and beat Austin Connelly on the second extra hole. ... Dallas native Megan Thothong shot a final-round 76 to defend her title in the 12-14 flight.
