Ward, 21, made six birdies, including four on the front side, and one bogey, on the par-4 12th.
Posey, 24, who plays out of Lakewood Country Club, was 1 under after 11 but finished with a flourish, birdieing four of his last six holes.
Four other golfers were a shot back of the leaders.
