Tuesday, September 11, 2007 @ West Lake in Jerseyville
Senior Mitch Gilman scores a low 38 to earn match medalist on the West Lake golf course in a match against Jerseyville and CM. The HHS boys' golf team traveled to Jerseyville again Tuesday, September 11, to play at the West Lake Country Club for the second time this season. A great night to play golf as the temperature and wind were very cooperative as it was around 82, sunny with a slight breese.
Although we did not reach our goal of shooting in the 150's, we brought home two victories beating out CM by thirty strokes and Jerseyville by thirteen. HHS scored a 161. CM scored a 191 while Jerseyville turned in a 174.
Senior Luke Potthast stepped onto the course with his A game turning in a season low 9-hole total of 40. If Luke continues turning in this type of score, our chanced to remain undefeated in regular season play improve dramatically. We need players like Luke Potthast, Steven Klingbeil, Ben Potthast, Michael Trobaugh and possibly one or two others to start turning in consistent rounds of 40 or better. We are hoping that this last match of Luke Potthast scoring 40 is a sign of good things to come during the next few matches. Sophomore Brendan Bargetzi turned in a 41 and three others tied turning in 42's; Senior Matt Royer, Senior Steven Klingbeil and Junior Michael Trobaugh.
It was great to see Senior Matt Royer come alive in his first varsity match as a senior. Both Luke Potthast and Matt Royer have obviously worked on their games during the past few weeks to be able to turn in scores like these. I think some of the chipping and putting drills are starting to pay off for the boys.
Wednesday, September 12, 2007 @ Woodlands in Alton v Bunker Hill
Smart golf was the theme for the evening as the Bulldogs turned it on against the Bunker Hill Minutemen in Alton. We spent a great deal of time talking about leaving the driver in the bag and hitting irons down the middle. The hope is that we found the formula for scoring what we are truly capable of: 154. The Bulldogs came alive tonight at the Woodlands turning in a team season low of 154.
For the first time in his golf career, Senior Steven Klingbeil earned the honor of match medalist by turning in a 37 on the par 35 front nine at the Woodlands. This is the first time this season where I have observed Steven play this consistent. The challenge was set for one of the boys to step up their game and find a more permanent spot in the top 6. Let's hope that Steven Klingbeil is one of those seniors who is ready to score on a more consistent basis.
Senior Mitch Gilman and Senior Matt Royer also scored low by turning in a pair of 38's. I was able to witness back to back birdies on a par four and then a par three as Matt Royer smiled his way to his season low 38. It was a great feeling to watch Matt enjoy the day on the golf course and help the team out as we turned in the 154. With a few more rounds in the thirties, Matt will earn his spot on the varsity squad.
Junior Carson Baugher rounded out our 154 with a 41. Although he wasn't pleased with this score, as he doubled one of the holes I was observing, this score brings his season average to a 39.2. Also scoring well, but not counting in the 154 was Brendan Bargetzi-42, Luke Potthast-44 and Ben Eilerman-46.
This brings our overall regular season match record to 12 and 0.
