(AP) -- Plano won its second straight Illinois High School Association Class 3A title with a 32-7 victory over Columbia on Friday at Memorial Stadium. Jeremy Cannon had two touchdowns for Plano, who just last year won the title with a 47-42 victory over St. Joseph-Ogden. Plano had a 14-7 lead with 8:02 left in the second quarter after Cannon returned an interception for 63 yards for a touchdown. It was the first interception returned for a TD in 3A title game history. "The play felt really fast," Cannon said. "I don't even know how to explain it. It happened in mere moments. I saw one guy go to the flat and another one come inside. I jumped the flat route but then turned to another guy coming inside. I was able to jump in front." On Columbia's next possession, punter Brian Winters threw a pass while he was in his own endzone and it fell incomplete at the 20. The Reapers took over at the Eagles' 7. After an offensive holding penalty, Cannon ran for a 17-yard score to help break the game open. The Reapers' running game was busy with 53 of their 57 offensive plays coming on the ground, amassing 242 yards. Senior fullback Luis Alvarado was the workhorse with 22 carries for 138 yards. Columbia (12-2) was led by quarterback Tyler Truttmann's 124 passing yards and John Heineken's 66 rushing yards. Plano (13-1) first qualified for the playoffs in 1980 and had not been back until 2005, when they made it to the Class 3A semifinals. "Defensively we knew we had to step it up every game and we did it," all-state senior linebacker Dan Peruski said. This was Columbia's first title game appearance. Prior to this year, the last time the Eagles won a playoff game was in 1992. They had been to the playoffs five times since and were eliminated in the first round each appearance.
