TOP STORIESPrep Sports Blog: This week in high school sports (02/08/09)08:22 PM CST on Sunday, February 8, 2009Friday night was loaded with games that were outright upsets and games that made you sit up and take notice. Here’s the scoop. The Ritenour Huskies (13-6) might have been in the shadows all year, but they went out with a bang when they defeated McCluer North 70-64 in conference action. The seven point deficit after one quarter did not hinder the Huskies. It was the third quarter that made the difference with Corey Allen scoring a whopping 28 points. Give me your sub north breakdown: bryan@prepcasts.com When the Chaminade Red Devils (19-2) beat the CBC Cadets (12-9) in December, the story line was all about Bradley Beal's 40+ points. Beal sank a half court shot to send the game into OT, where he scored double figures. On Friday, the Cadets returned the favor. Seth Jackson banged home a 3-ball to tie the game in the waning seconds of regulation. CBC ran off a 17-3 OT period to hand the Flyers their first conference defeat with a 79-65 win. What impact will this have on these two teams in the same district? bryan@prepcasts.com Another team under the radar has been the Oakville Tigers (15-6). Oakville used a rousing 27-point 4th quarter to upend the Parkway South Patriots (15-6) 62-52. Keith Pickens’ double-double of 18 points-14 rebounds was a major factor in the Tigers victory. Many might not consider this an upset since the Tigers do have 15 wins under their belt. Thoughts on this game: bryan@prepcasts.com It isn't often that a 3-14 team pulls an upset at this time of the year. The U. City Lions toppled the Seckman Jaguars (8-9) 86-70. Corrion Johnson led the Lions with his 23 points, 9 assists and 9 rebounds. Tell me what’s more impressive: the win, or 86 points? bryan@prepcasts.com Unbeaten strings on the road aren't very common. However, the Carthage Lady Tigers (15-5) kept their string in tact with an impressive win at Republic High School 47-43. Republic held a 39-31 lead after three quarters, but a 16-4 final quarter paved the way for Carthage. A key 3-pointer by Ryann Hartley at the 2:07 mark gave the Tigers their first lead of the night, a lead they never lost). Upsets in your neck of the woods? bryan@prepcasts.com Talk about having the game stolen from you. Just ask the Harrisburg Bulldogs (12-4) about it in the Championship game of the Southern Boone Classic. Seeded No. 2, the Bulldogs had the ball with 45 seconds remaining and the score tied at 48 with the No. 6-seed Fulton Hornets. Milking time and playing for the last shot, dreams were shattered as Jon Sidney deflected a pass with eight seconds left. He raced after and went up for a shot and was fouled at the buzzer. With the crowd going wild and no time left on the clock, Sidney knocked down his first attempt and the Fulton fans went into a frenzy. What a finish! The 20-0 Rock Bridge Bruins had a rough and tumble game with the Raytown South Cardinals (12-9). The Cards canned four 3-balls in the first quarter to take an early lead. Two 9-0 runs in the 2nd quarter turned the tide and the Bruins rolled 79-65. In a telling stat, Rock Bridge out-shot Raytown South from the FT line -- 22 of 32 as opposed to 2 of 6 for the visitors in the contest. Is Rock Bridge the sole favorite? bryan@prepcasts.com Avenging early season losses always tastes sweet to the February victors. The Kirksville Lady Tigers (9-10) blew a 12-point lead in their December loss to Moberly. This time around, things were different. Blair Riley scored 17 points in the 67-51 Kirksville win. A 15-1 run in the 4th quarter prevented a repeat of squandering a lead as Kirksville had done in December. Sometimes in basketball, one or two men can carry the offense. In Charleston this week, the Blue Jays (9-9) staved off a Jackson (9-10) rally to win 66-57. Donald Dixon and Deonte Jones scored 53 of the 66 Blue Jay points (including all but 3 in the first half) on the way to the win. Any other dynamic duos? bryan@prepcasts.com Congrats to Tyler Holtmeyer who crossed the 1000 point plateau for St. Elizabeth in the 71-41 win over Chamois earlier this week. Do you know of others who passed this milestone ? bryan@prepcasts.com In addition to more Girls and Boys basketball games, the Prepcasts Broadcasting Network will bring you the MWAA Swimming Championships this week. We’ll also begin our coverage of the Bethalto Hockey Playoff "run" for your high school sports enjoyment. |
