LOUIS (AP) -- Quarterback Joe Kaufman scored from 1-yard in the second overtime to give Orrick a 34-28 win over Thayer in the Class 1 Missouri State High School Football Championship game Friday. Orrick (15-0) started the second overtime on defense and got an interception from Clayton Jones to stop Thayer (12-2) on its attempt. The second overtime capped a wild game in which both teams scored touchdowns in the final 20 seconds of regulation. Orrick appeared to have won the game when Logan Eubank ran it in from 16 yards out with 17 seconds to play to give the Bearcats a 20-14 lead. Orrick, which has not kicked an extra point this year, then went for two points but Eubank was stopped short. Thayer returned the ensuing kick to its 38. And with 11 seconds left, Jacob Eckman found Lance Schneider, who raced into the end zone with no time left on the clock. However, Ethan Leisenring's PAT was blocked. Both teams scored in the first overtime and got 2-point conversions to make it 28-28. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
