Cotto signs letter of intent to play at SLU
Alton high basketball standout Ruben Cotto says he could not resist the opportunity to play for SLU’s Rick Majerus, so today he signed a letter of intent to play for the Billikens.

Smith signs to play in South Carolina
Alton high basketball standout Brandon Smith is heading to South Carolina State to play basketball next year. Smith signed his letter of intent Wednesday afternoon.

Coach Ryan: The Week in High School Sports
A brief break in the winter-like weather provided us with some excellent high school games. This should be expected as we move down the schedule into mid-April now. Why? Players begin to make “plays” as they should and games tighten up! As the temps dropped later in the week, so did the hitting.

After the long storm that wiped out or postponed many games during the last 10 days, a bright sun was greeted with joy by Missouri coaches. When action resumed, pitchers dominated many games across the state.

Q&A: Troy Buchanan girls soccer looks to grow in '08
The team is looking pretty good. We are going to have our share of turbulence, but that is to be expected especially early in the season. I believe that as the season wears on and the younger, less experienced players grown and mature in the game, we will be playing some quality soccer and hopefully turning some heads while we're doing it.

Coach Ryan: The week in high school sports
Let's begin with the Class 3 Boys Championship. Lutheran North Coach Brent Rueter devised a clever game plan to attempt to nullify Maplewood's marquee player, Antonio Bryant. His Crusaders 1-3-1 zone would double team the Bryant, the point guard, each time that he touched the ball and force him to give it up, push him beyond his normal shooting range.

Turner named new coach at Belleville high school
A Belleville high school has hired from within to replace a legendary football coach. Ken Turner, 37, is taking over for Glenn Schott, who retired last November after 37 years on the job. Turner is a seven-year assistant at Althoff Catholic High School.

District Championships saw some ghost-busting action... some top teams dodge the bullet while others were shot up in flames...some key players were injured ... one player scores 43 points and loses!..usual mixture of upsets....it was all there.....read our "take" on it.
