ISSAQUAH, Wash. - An Issaquah teenager, who lost his leg in a boating accident last summer, has joined his high school tennis team. Seventeen-year-old Chandler Balkman uses a specially equipped wheelchair on the court. He's been named a co-captain of the team. It's been just a year since Chandler was run over by a boat while swimming in Lake Sammamish. His leg was severed at the hip. "Wheelchair tennis is hard, sometimes painful, but it doesn't do any good to sit around and moan," said Chandler. "As we've gone through this year, the doctors said 'Chandler you shouldn't have lived.' Rather than marking the anniversary of the day he lost his leg, its the day Chandler was saved," said Chandler's mom, Susan. Chandler will compete in doubles against players who are not in wheelchairs. Interscholastic rules allow wheelchair players two bounces of the ball instead of one. Chandler's goal is to become an orthopedic surgeon, specializing in amputations. |
